What to Expect During a Typical Session
At your first session I will welcome you to the practice and do my best to help you feel comfortable and relaxed. We will spend some time talking so that I can answer any questions you may have about Reiki, and also to give us time to complete your initial consultation. When you are ready I will ask you to remove your shoes, and you can then choose if you would like to be treated lying on the massage table, or sitting comfortably in a chair.
You are treated fully clothed, usually covered with a blanket and supported where necessary by pillows and towels. The whole emphasis of the treatment is about helping you to feel comfortable and relaxed, so gentle music is played, candles lit and incense burned to help promote deep relaxation. Of course you can choose not to have these if you wish!

The Hand Positions
The hand positions I use differ depending on a client's reasons for coming for treatment. Each client is individual and has their own specific needs, as a result treatments differ accordingly. In a typical session, however, I will start at the head and work down the front of the body, omitting personal areas, finishing at the feet. My hands will be placed just slightly above your body or will rest very gently on a specific area.
If you are lying down, and once I have worked down the front of the body, I will touch you gently on the shoulder and ask you to turn over. I then work from your head down to your feet along the back of your body omitting any personal areas.

Common Responses
You may experience a warm to hot sensation under my hands over the areas being treated. There is a wide range of responses to treatment and you may experience all of the following to varying degrees, or non:Some clients fall asleep, Reiki is deeply relaxing and it's not uncommon for clients to sleep throughout their session.
Some people experience tingling or prickling.
Some people see a range of bright or dark colours.
Some clients feel the need to cough or sneeze or experience a rumbling tummy. Reiki encourages the release of blockages and this can manifest in a number of physical responses.
Occasionally people feel the need to cry as they let go of emotional tension.
Most people experience deep relaxation and drift off, feeling deep levels of calm and well-being, not unlike being in a meditative state.
Occasionally people experience slightly odd sensations of wooziness, and sensations of pulling or pushing, as blockages are being released. These sensations are completely normal and don't usually last very long.
At the End of Our Session
I will quietly tell you the session is finished and allow you the necessary time to come to. Generally people feel very sleepy and "spaced out". It is very important that you have a drink at the end of the session to help you feel awake and grounded again. (It is also important to drink plenty in the 24 hours following your session to help flush any toxins out of your system.)Then you replace your shoes, pay for your session and set dates for any ongoing Reiki treatments.
Generally, clients leave their Reiki sessions feeling cared for, supported, deeply relaxed, and often, greatly energised.
Steve, Support Worker/Undergraduate
"Reiki has made a tremendous difference to our service users with autism. The Reiki sessions have helped them cope better with the emotional challenges around them. They enjoy Emma's sessions and find them very relaxing. Emma sent me Reiki (Distant Healing) during a very emotional time, and it helped me through a very difficult day."
John, Manager, Residence for Adults with Autism.
"Reiki came at the right time for me, a perfect solution for calming and centring myself and my children. I was looking for a way to relieve stress and tension during an important period of change in my life. Emma was extremely sensitive to this and helped me develop my own journey, carefully guiding me through the principles, teachings and techniques of Usui Reiki. I completed my Reiki training feeling confident I could use this healing system to develop a strong sense of well-being, integrating my mind, spirit and emotions."
Claire, Primary School Head Teacher.
